Need help here #homesteading

I have wasps in may garden - not next to it, in the soil. I want to poison the evil bastards since it sound like a painful way to die, but it’s in my garden

What do I do?

I attached a pic & some videos, don’t know if the videos will work though https://nostr.build/av/18531612a0fc9c584ba4e9ca2739539333bd4d1ae591631767d6f63ca7b73e8c.mov https://nostr.build/av/d80b12f6714dd7813c461eee4f8386473fbab96e99bd4751f968807734124b7f.mov https://nostr.build/av/bfc82b1f6928174c2047d4c5e925488cf690a9136458af8ac4c4ee2bbf20cfc3.mov

I thought they helped pollinate gardens? Is that just more bs?

They may be meat bees. Miserable.. half of them sting you and the other half just want to saw off a bite of your flesh. Generally I don’t mind wasps and hornets, but they don’t need to be IN the garden. Gardens should bring joy.

There are many pollinators. Some wasps pollinate. Other wasps don’t pollinate at all. The worst kind of wasps are the ones that rip the flower open to get the pollen before other pollinators. Those kinds use the pollen, but don’t pollinate because they destroy instead for create.

Thanks! There is a lot of bee and wasp propaganda out there lol

Well, some of that propoganda is truth, some is complete fabrication, and most is about halfway between.

I’m not all about killing bugs whenever I see them, I like snakes, I like bees and wasps, but I have kids and I expect them to garden with me. As a compromise, I try to mitigate things and get rid of what I KNOW will make it miserable for them. If you can’t get to your own harvest without getting stung to kingdom come, there’s no point in having a garden.

Oh yeah - there’s a bunch that aren’t in the garden that will absolutely be left alone

Actually the worst kind of wasp is the kind that stings you when you weed the garden. I hit hit 3x & it hit my French Mastiff in the dome.

That’s how to shorten your life span, sting my dog

Let me bee

Yum

🤭

What does this type do at night? Bed down in their hole?

Brake parts cleaner kills wasps and hornets better than wasp and hornet spray. I know it’s a miserable thing to be spraying around the environment, but it doesn’t leave residue like the bug killer does either.

I’d wait til night time if they all go to sleep there. Then put the red tube on the can, get it down in the hole pretty good and basically just try to fill the hole with fumes.

They appear to bed down - brake fluid might be the answer here

Discovered it when I was trapped under a car and started getting dive bombed by mud daubers.. words were said, oaths were made, they all died an awful death. They get completely disoriented and start trying to sting themselves, but their anatomy won’t let them.😆

That is what I want for them, an awful death

Moral of the story, if you’re a hornet don’t mess with a man thats already frustrated by rusty bolts and can’t find his 10MM socket.

Lol

Yellow jacket hornets are extremely fierce. In the past I have usually put something over the hole to give them an entrance /exit where they don't feel exposed and threatened and defensive everytime a shadow passes over the nest entrance. Then I avoid that specific area for the rest of the year. They usually seem to relocate sometime between fall and spring

I have poured nasty stuff in their holes before but didn't enjoy it

Be careful

They're predators that attack other pests. but, I understand, they have to go.

DE (diamatecous earth), dusted around the entrance will be effective, but it will kill any insects, including beneficial bees & butterflies that come in contact.

#smij doesn't like man-made pesticides. they poison everything

I have diatomaceous earth, I dusted it around my beehives when they had an ant infestation years ago - would this be a better plan? Will this not hurt my garden?

DE will kill any invertebrate it comes in contact with, including honeybees. that saiid, if you're dusting around the ground wasp's entrance, you probably will just kill them. DE is basically calcium and won't otherwise hurt your garden.

I wouldn't use brake fluid or any petroleum based pesticides.
