Yes, currently using several relays like eden.nostr.land , nostr.wine
Paid relays mostly used to combat the spam. Mainly because spam actor won't likely spend much to pay to spread their spam
Depends, personally i would recommend it using both but you need to set their settings properly. In Amethyst, i can set all relays enabled for my home feed while only enable some for global feed (paid relays + filter.nostr.wine + nostr.mom + nos.lol ). nostr.mom (more strict spam filter) and nos.lol have some spam filter, lesser spam compared to another free public relay
