What is the point of MuSig if FROST exists?

FROST?

Talked to #[2] about this at nostr beach in Miami.

He mentioned nesting frost inside of musig. This way you could setup Lightning channels with MuSig, but one of your MuSig keys is a collection of frost keys.

MuSig is unanimous and FROST is threshold. He said this would let you use FROST thresholds on lightning, since lightning is currently built around MuSig.

Rebuilding Lightning with FROST, Eltoo, and PTLCs directly built-in seems like a better approach in the long-run. 🐢

Lightning is not built around MuSig. Lightning doesn't even use schnorr signatures anywhere.

I’m not sure what he was referring to. Just regurgitating his logic here. If FROST is just as easy to use for Lightning as MuSig, then I don’t see the point of MuSig either. :-)

Taproot Lightning uses MuSig between the counterparties. FROST can be nested within MuSig to provide distributed t-of-n security to both or either counterparty.

😎 takes awhile to be proven correct… thanks for replying Jesse!

Hey nostr:npub180cvv07tjdrrgpa0j7j7tmnyl2yr6yr7l8j4s3evf6u64th6gkwsyjh6w6,I would like to tell you I’ve completely given up on Nostr 2.0.

I think there’s a better way to bring optional statefulness to Nostr without relying on blockchains to sync relays. Will release soon. 🚂

Good to know. I have fond memories of you using a picture of a cute dirty child insulting me on Twitter about how Nostr 2.0 would destroy Nostr.

😁 good times, good times…

I ain’t afraid to iterate. 😎

I decided that users paying on-chain transactions to sync their profile’s state across relays is just too impractical for normies. Mental cost & financially.

Twas a neat technical idea otherwise.

Musig is easier

what is the point of bicycles if automobiles exist?

Invalid analogy.

AFAIK, MuSig is an easier protocol. Possibly less interactions and easier key/round setup.

Generating a MuSig is a non-interactive process, whereas FROST requires a multi-round interactive setup.

Generating a MuSig *key* is non-interactive, unlike FROST . . .
