The open, and permissionless nature means that we’ll have more service and product providers with differing perspectives on what and how to build.
The #nostr user will see more value, as there is a lesser chance we will get one closed wall corporation that dinosaurs, and loses the need to provide value to their users.
If something is not built, or not up to par the next dev does not need to ask for permission to build from a corporate.
And the best part of this is the speech cannot fully be censored, there is no central authority that will go out and stop all relays or be able to remove data from all of them.

FOSS software is made so by licenses. Which offer certain permissions. Most FOSS uses a type of license that doesn’t allow reproducing and then closing the software.
With more Open Software we will have more collaboration. People learn more as they are put in difficult environments. So if #FOSS becomes the norm, eventually it might not be that difficult to understand.
The short version for me is FOSS means people have the ability to make it what they want it to be. Freedom is invaluable when it comes to software. The most important software we have today was all built on this idea.
