Donβt trust any food company whose #1 goal is to maximize shareholder value!

This is hard because we need capitalism. I've never worked for any private company that is not focused on net profit. I think its about verifying information independently.
I totally agree & am 100% for Free Markets. Food meant to nourish our bodys is different, and that makes this a complex dilemma...
I get your sentiment......to me its understanding that (most) stuff that comes in a packet, that lasts for months, has ingredients you could not put in your own kitchen is not food, (rather they are just products)......then everything becomes easy. Its the cost of food (meat, eggs and fish and so forth) has become so expensive. I want to live in a society where the poorest people can afford food.
I think a big part of the complexity is a system that allows me to invest enough into a company to persuade it to sell products that cause health problems, then I can sell my shares and walk away before the consequences come knocking on the door.
