The salsa addition is a new one for me. I do typically add hot sauce though, so makes sense.

Yes. I was shocked at how much adding a little lime juice to my soups at the end made them pop.
It worked, I used a mild salsa so it wouldn't be too spicy for the kiddo. That little bit of acidity really boosts the flavor.
