Nostr vs Mastodon question Global Timeline Question #asknostr
As Nostr grows, it will be annoying to see your global timeline with posts in other languages
On Mastodon, you can easily mute foreign instances and forget about it
How can nostr solve this?
The Global Timeline will be an unusable mess once more users and countries connect to the same relays and this will deter new users
i would actually like it to be solved with better/faster translations, then it’s a proper global public square.
I use #DamusPurple it has a built in translation. Also to see other languages isn't tough, just highlight and translate.
That would be cool but let me give you a good example from the fediverse
If i block a few japan instances or relays, i can avoid seeing sexually explicit images of toddlers and little girls
As nost grows, the pedos will also come and post their crap over and over amd theres nothing we can do on nostr to stop it lol

If you been on nostr a while, you should have seen it as a spam haven. Because of its design. Spammers can spam all the relays with no effort. It got better with clients doing weird hacks but ...this design has serious flaws compared to the competition and can be ddossed easily

Clients like #Amethyst have in-built translations in multiple languages.
It's not annoying to see different languages when you can understand them and engage with those notes
Misskey Japan server , from the fediverse, blocked westerners from signing up because they kept complaining about the sexually explicit child photos they posted and cited it as a cultural difference
How do we stop thst on nsotr then? Yeah its great to have language translated but how will we censor an entire country from posting toddlers performing sexuals acts on one another ?
All this crazy shit amd more is happening right now on the fediverse
I dont even think Amethyst is translating good because it still makes no sense
Not sure if I understood the problem then.. If to see those sensible contents you need you need to be connected to that relay, why there's a need to block it.
I don't connect or I mute what I don't want to see or engage.
Users can blast to as many relays as they want though. Toddler-con from Japan for example, can spread all over nostr and theres nothing anyone can do.
Now imaging muting or blocking an entire countries userbase manually.......
Yeah I see.. there's where paid Relays, or the ones like Damus has, help to prevent that kind of spam.
Not sure if there is a solution for it.. public relays are just like public squares, everything can happen, there's no State or Authority that can block it.
Probably that's how global should be, and we should create tools that permits us to navigate every realay with the possibilities to unsee what we know we will not like..
Maybe in the future we can choose an AI tool that will read images and analize if there's content you chose not ro see and will block it for you before you read the note.. so there's no manually block, the tool already knows what you do want or not want to see.
Misskey Software for the fediverse actually has those AI capabilities now which is cool.
New users wont like having to pay right away and wont know about that yet.
This will be an interesting problem to see solved. Once the Pedos and Japanese Toddler-con base moves, its over. A lot of it is coming through the mostr.pub relay now .
In NOSTR the relays are intentionally dumb and lightweight.
I guess relays would become naturally language / location specialised.
Language then becomes more of a client issue as shown by #Amethyst auto-translating.
It's kind-of telling that the #fediverse solution is blocking / censorship.
Well on fedi, the user can decide to mute an entire relay or the admin can do that as well. That is great. Dumb relays like Nostr has now has already been a spam problem. They are open doors to spam and basically easy DDOS targets
As Nostr grows, the Global view will be impossible to use. Using Nostr now in the evening is not good because most of the posts are not in English. Eventually on Nostr, relays will get overwhelmed and the Globsl Tineline will be useless and essentially a DDOS on the client.
