-THE ISLAND LIFE-

SUMERIAN NUTRITION

Sumerians were one of the first societies to switch to agriculture in addition to fishing. Barley in particular was one of the main ingredients of their meals.

They used barley both by cooking, crushing and raw. If you were living in the Sumerian period, you would use barley in all your meals. In addition to barley, onions, lentils, garlic, leeks and chickpeas were also the main ingredients used in meals.

Goat's milk was drunk and eggs were also eaten. Pigs, wild chicken, deer, goats and chicken were the most famous meats of the Sumerians.

Archaeologists have discovered more than 50 species of fish written on clay tablets. The tablets were dated to 2300 BC. Fried fish vendors; did a great trade with the city of Ur. Ur had a very large bazaar selling food. Fruits; apples, figs, watermelons, grapes, plums, mulberries, dates and peaches were sold.

Some records also include information on honey, cheese, butter, and vegetable oil. Bread had to be soaked in butter, oil, and sesame seeds. Of course, farms were sometimes far from cities, and there had to be some form of transportation to get food to the cities.

So the Sumerians built irrigation canals (I call them food tunnels).

Sumerian food is a very interesting subject to learn about, and I hope you will research it further.
