This is definitely not the first report that I've heard about this happening at defcon. Sad really.
Damn that’s wild. Very very scary. I would call the police immediately, record video the entire time, and not open the door unless police are present. Not a lawyer but this definitely seems illegal. They certainly can ask you to leave as it’s their establishment, but basically everything else feels either unlawful or at least highly problematic.
I don't think so. Defcon people bring scary electronics like laptops,exposed circuit boards, and pelican cases of gear.
Besides the people running audio at Nashville, the most scary electronics I saw was a guy with grapheneOS installed on a pixel.
There's so many conferences in October! Bah! This one looks dope though.
I made the mistake once of thinking bitcoin conferences were obviously going to be technical. I've learned to change my expectations.
There were stories like this a decade ago from what I recall. Don't organize security conferences in a city run by maffia?

If I were paying to have an event there and they did that to my attendees without ever warning us, I would be pissed. That’s something they need to bring up in the first place.

For context, Vegas hotels are currently pissed at defcon and attendees because last year, MGM got ransomwared right after defcon. So not to say they won’t with bitcoin attendees, but they feel threatened by defcon attendees specifically.
