Ironically, content discovery is one of the things that we absolutely do not need to store requests/responses for in perpetuity. The most popular DVM is terribly designed.

Agreed. We do not need to store this. There's multiple ways to avoid this, be it ephemeral events, expiration tags etc.

We’ve proposed a new DVM spec that moves to ephemeral kinds, which should solve this issue - any feedback you could provide would be appreciated 🙏 (we also added a guidance section for relay operators near the bottom) https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nips/pull/1941
