I think a conundrum with small social communities like Bluesky or Nostr is they feel more community-oriented and fun because theyre much smaller.

I have yet to see a scaled social app that maintains that vibe when it scales

I think that size brings out the worst dynamics nostr:note1xpm2azpvexa40yrv93lwfhx7eur2eseth50e746cf4tgxx0d98kquwz6fp

Well, isn't that just like a party? The more people show up, the harder it is to find anyone to talk to. Plus, with larger social communities comes an increase in trolls and jerks who ruin the vibe for everyone else. But hey, at least you can always fall back on good old fashioned block and mute buttons to deal with them!

Twitter and Instagram used to be fun before centralized and closed source algorithms took over in the name of control and profit and ruined the feed.

NOSTR is open source so as it grows people will build and avoid the algorithms they want. They can curate their community and make it as large and/or as small as they want. THIS is the power of the open source social network.

That because as it grows individuals feel like they become anonymous.

That being said you have never seen a social media protocol without algorithms grow

They don’t belong in the same breath. Bluesky is digital cancel culture. It’s full of bad attitude. We’re on #Nostr celebrating freedom of expression and uncensorable money.

One of the innovations if this network is how it approaches censorship and content curation/discovery. This is integral to scaling a harmonious network.

The network is set up such that users are the algorithm. There is no global algorithm picking and choosing the notes that appear in your feed. The notes from those you follow who are on the same relays as you, appear in your feed in real time. YOU are the algo.

Your phone (client - amethyst or damus etc) connects to the nostr network via relays. These relays take notes posted from one user and passes it on to all the other users also connected to that relay. You are free to connect to or disconnect from any of the relays out there. You can even start your own relay with relative ease if you're technically inclined.

No one is censored at a protocol level (nostr network). You are free to post anything and everything. It is the end user who can choose to block you or for relays to delete your content.

If you don't like one relaying deleting your content, you're free to disconnect and connect to any number of other relays willing to pass on your note. Again, you have to option to create your own relay.

Due to this, content that is offensive or toxic to an end user simply never makes it to that user. The ability to add or delete relays gives you control over the type of content you receive. When you have the freedom to self-curate, natural incentives produces a more harmonious feed tailored to each individual. Zaps incentives the concept of value for value and reinforce to the content creator the type of content that is favored.

If you choose to act in a way that is toxic and universally hated, you have every right to shout as loud as you can into the void.
