I've been deeply embedded in the Google ecosystem for a really long time, but was able to wean myself off of Chrome and move over to Firefox. It took a couple of tries but I would highly recommend trying to stick with it. For one, Google is disabling ad blockers on Chrome and is generally less secure than firefox.

That was my plan, but I ran into too many things that just don’t work properly on Firefox. But I didn’t know about Google’s plan to block blockers. I’m an AdBlock Premium subscriber. If that breaks, I’m out.

Another option is to use Pi-Hole, the network wide ad blocker. You can VPN into to home with OpenVPN if you want to use it on the go.

A good reminder to set this up again. I ran it long ago.

Check out NextDNS and block ads and other malicious content at the DNS level.
