If we're talking about all of human history, I don't think it was just elites.
Anthropologists have found tribes with all kinds of practices that you would not expect
But was the average person watching sex more than actually having sex? I find that hard to believe
You can watch a lot of sex. Doing it is physically demanding. They didn't have TV, so watching was a form of entertainment.
Also you first said "an" average person, I take that differently than "the"average person. I don't think MOST people watched so much
