Follow these 'paid' relays. 7-8 is ideal, IMO. Can expect paid relays to be robust and last long. Can't rely on free relays. They might shut shop next month.

Yes. You need to pay them. To do that, replace 'wss' with 'https' and open that URL in your browser. You will be taken to the home page of the relay.
You enter yours npub and make the lightning payment there and then the relays will start responding to you.
You only need to pay if you want to push your events to those relays. To read from a paid relay is always free.
Initially, I had the same opinion. But then in the relay home pages, it's mentioned payment is required for both publishing and fetching events. Now I am not sure how this actually works!
To fetch is not the same as to push. And obviously to READ. I said, to read from paid relays IS ALWAYS FREE hehehe

no. isn't the same. you can read events from a pubkey and you can not fetch events related to another event on the relay.... that is the diference. I hope you understand-

To read from a paid realy is always free. You only need to pay for pushing events to those paid relays.
