Woah, since when does Orbot make it possible to visit onion links via safari?? I thought it only worked for DuckDuckGo the last time I checked…

Anyone care to share their thoughts on pros and cons? #asknostr

(Of course, Apple is a black box so please never use this for something where privacy and security are top priorities).l

Also GN, I am so very very sleepy

I use Orbot with the onion 🧅 browser

It’s like being anonymous on my iPhone lol

It’s awesome for privacy

Problem is I have to turn it on when I wanna be private and off when I need to use like cash app or something…

Apps like cash app won’t let you operate anonymously rn

Yeah I’ve definitely found a few apps and websites that won’t load. But overall it’s pretty smooth. (So far)

If you're running Orbot in VPN mode, all traffic goes through the tor connection. Perhaps that's why Safari is handling .onion URLs?

That would explain it (although i thought I remember most browsers still not working, but now I’m not so sure lol)

I don't know anything about Apple and Safari, but I know you can configure browsers to handle .onion URLs. Perhaps Safari includes handling for that TLD by default. Just guessing.

I can get any app to route through orbot. That is what the choose apps feature is for. It can be done selectively so you can still use clearnet for your clearnet stuff.

That's a different mode. In VPN mode, it acts just like a VPN, routing all your traffic through the Orbot gateway.

This is my VPN mode configuration. Call it what you want.

Ya that's right. That's the VPN mode. When that toggle is disabled, only apps you select are routed through Orbot.

VPN mode still entails access to onion links and multiple hop privacy, right? As in, still uses Tor but the phone treats it like a VPN… at least that’s how I believe I’m using it, although I’ve never been promoted to exclude any apps from being routed thru it 🤔

Yes, that's correct. VPN mode refers specifically how it's implemented on the phone/device, not its underlying capabilities. A browser configured to handle .onion URLs will render properly when connected to tor via Orbot's VPN mode.

Also, you can always go to check.torproject.org to confirm whether you are connected and routing through the tor network.
