Instant death sentence for Proton products for me. I always test all apps right before switching to a service. RIP. Just glad I tested before buying a year family subscription. 😂

Weird. I have it running on my pure GrapheneOS without GPlayServices…
It's the 2FA. My account is setup with a hardware 2FA so it defaults to that. It didn't tell me that was the problem, but it works if I use a backup code or OTP. Lame, but it works. Thanks for the input!
Thank you for sharing! Until I find a place where I can get a hardware 2FA, I am using OTP; your experience will help me when I configure the key!
It turns out that you have to know that 2FA is the need for GPS. Use anything other than hardware 2FA and it will login. Haven't tested notifications yet.
I use 2FA with fido and don't have any issues without google play services? I'm pulling apks from either their site or github depending on the app. The only thing I don't get is notifications (which is awesome) when I get new mail, but other than that and a bit of sluggishness everything's been working.
I'm using Obtainium to fetch the apks.
So am I. Screenshot is there. Notifications don't work either.
Notifications not working for me is a no go. I put them on silent but still want them. Lame as fuck for the price since Tuta does it. Thanks for sharing your experience though. Helps me figure out what is there for others
I hear you it's nice. I know notifications are one of those problem areas for non-play apps. I think the only option is to have a background process running all the time which consumes battery, or use a built-in notification service like Play. Could be wrong, but I know it's a problem area for many apps.
It could work with an ungoogled sideloaded version from another store like fdroid
I don't see any official F-droid release. I'm using the APK from their repo. Notifications don't work.
You don't like microG?
No. Tuta implemented their own notification service for privacy and Proton should too, or at least copy someone else's. They're being fucking lazy and it annoys me. It's their company though and I'm paying a different one that meets my needs. Everyone wins. I tried Proton again because I see it frequently recommended and it looks wonderful from a high level view. Unfortunately, almost of the services are half baked and useless for me as they are.
