They've been like it long before covid. Its an asian thing. A lot wear them because they think it will stop germs spreading.
When I visited I was told it's because a lot of people get hayfever. Apparently after the war they planted loads of cedar and eventually discovered lots of people were allergic to it.

This was one of the big things that started my bullshit radar. I have worn various respirators at work for years and I know their limitations. People are deluding themselves if they believe a cloth or surgical mask would do anything, even if viruses were a real thing to begin with.
People who are still stuck in this belief after these past few years cannot be reasoned with.
