I think closing the source that you forked is against the open source ethic. You collect benefit to yourself from the open source world while refusing to give back.
Worth noting that Ubuntu is open source and they even give away pro licences but Canonical turns a profit. So "he deserves to profit from his work" is particularly stupid as a defence of his actions but it seems to be what his defenders say in his defense.
