You dont need a websocket, you just need http. Websockets are in fact the weakest part of the system. Nost is bigger than NostR. It has always been this way. What's new is not secp256k1, which has been around ages, but taproot and schnorr. What websockets add are realtime updates.

websockets are indeed a problem for mass adoption. They don't scale well cause they take resources even when idle. I'd add a rest get API for lot of use cases, i.e. the profile fetches nip1.
