Dumb question here but what does opening a channel on nostr:npub1getal6ykt05fsz5nqu4uld09nfj3y3qxmv8crys4aeut53unfvlqr80nfm mean ?

It's the only thing stopping me from actually using it's service.

Lightning uses actual Bitcoin UTXOs. However, they are owned by two people, instead of just one. That co-owned UTXO is a payment channel in which the owners agree on how much of the channel they are each owed when they decide to close it. This agreement is updated every time you make or receive a payment through that co-owned UTXO channel.

In order to make or receive any payments on Lightning, you must have at least one channel opened with someone, either by you locking up your own on-chain bitcoin into a co-owned UTXO, or asking someone else to lock their Bitcoin into a channel with you. In the latter case, they will usually charge a fee.

You should also be somewhat picky about who you open a channel with. The best channel partners are folks you can reach out to if your node is down, to keep them from force-closing the channel, and who are connected to the broader network via their existing channels.

After this, we can start talking about liquidity, and having the amount you want to receive or send available in the direction you want it to go.

Welcome to self-custody #Lightning!

Thanks for the deep information 🙏🏼. I am actually using Minibits along with Amethyst

Minibits is a completely different model. Unlike with self-custody Lightning, the sats in your wallet are just tokens representing actual Bitcoin, and are only indirectly connected to an on-chain UTXO so ffar as the eCash mint is being honest about their creation and destruction.

This gives you arguably better privacy than Lightning, but with the downside of trusting the mint. However, they also manage the liquidity for payments outside of the mint, which means you don't have to.

It is a trade-off of trust in order to gain convenience and privacy.

I have also noticed that zappung via NWC is slower with Minibits than when using my own Alby Hub.

Yes it's considerably slower

I was using just primal wallet it was fast because it was built in primal

So you use Alby Hub ? I have a Alby address and hub , but I don't have a dedicated laptop to leave it running

I do, but I don't use it in a stand-alone way. I already had a #Lightning node running on a @Start9 with several payment channels already set up and ready to go. So my Alby Hub installation is just using my existing node's liquidity and providing the means to easily have a Lightning address, set up #NostrWalletConnect to ALL THE THINGS, and get my family members set up with their own (custodial) wallets on my node.

Using #AlbyHub, I can be my family's Lightning bank, so they don't have to bother with knowing how liquidity works whatsoever. This, of course, means I could rug them at any time, but I would have to be a real POS husband and father to rug my own wife and kids.
