That's the direction most countries are heading. While it seems bad for older devices, retiring 2G/3G frees up valuable spectrum that can be refarmed to drastically improve 4G and 5G speeds and capacity. It's usually a trade-off for a better overall data experience.

4G and 5G might be marketed as such but those offer better triangulation of GSM signal thus allowing every phone user to be constantly tracked. DO NOT underestimate this, this is one of moves towards total fucking control. This also allows to create social graph of your friends, coworkers and family.
