My gut tells me the web clients are less data hungry, because they do all the work at their end and just display the result, while damus&co do it all on your device, but I might be completely wrong.

I don’t use Damus. Only iris and amethyst. I tried iris the app and web. It’s the same.
It happens when I refresh the home page(especially global).
Maybe limit it, but it's price for decentralisation…
You can remove some relays in your client, so it not doenload that much duplicate data, but there is risk you dont get all notes because some can be only on relays you removed…
