Getting my small Katahdin sheep flock settled in at the farm this spring has been really fun. Learning how to move them around with the electric net fencing and making sure the fence is properly charged has been the tricky part, but other than that they are so simple to manage thus far.

We’re in the process of looking for a homestead to buy and sheep are one of the main animals I want to have. How did you learn about keeping them? We mainly want them for meat but I’m interested in sheep dairying as well. I’ve heard katahdins can be dual purpose.
I volunteered and then worked part time on a farm where my now friends raise sheep chickens and now cattle. I helped slaughter chickens and got to talk shop with fellow farmers throughout the day. Took a permaculture design course read books including:
All Flesh is Grass by Gena Logsdon, The Art and Science of Grazing by Sarah Flack. Also lots of YouTube videos by people like Joel Saladin, Nature’s Always Right, Greg Judy, the Shepardess, and others. Also, in the process of finding sheep to purchase I’ve had many informative conversations with other shepherds who have helped me hone in on the style of management I want to implement. Hope that helps.
