โšก๏ธ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿš” WATCH - Discover on Nostr the heartbreaking story of a theft of $1.1 million in crypto...

A crypto wallet containing $1.1 million was completely emptied after a policeman's camera revealed a seedphrase during an arrest.

An unbelievable but very real story.

Nevada State Police are checking a man for what appears to be a simple, minor tax problem.

The police decide to search the car for tax documents.

They find a folded piece of paper in the glove compartment.

The officer moves the paper and sees twelve handwritten words.

To anyone: gibberish.

To a crypto enthusiast: a seed phrase.

And then, the drama:

๐Ÿ”น The scene is filmed by the policeman's bodycam.

๐Ÿ”น The arrest is broadcast live.

๐Ÿ”น The wallet is emptied in less than an hour.

No appeal possible. The court concludes that there has been no data breach.

โšก๏ธ MORE - That seed phrase is the BIP-39 master key to every address in the wallet

โœฅ Offline paper avoids hacks, but one camera flash, photocopier, or nosy buddy = irreversible loss of control

โœฅ No password managers. No USB drives

โœฅ He trusted old-school paper backups to avoid digital compromise

โœฅ But the paper didnโ€™t protect him from something far dumber: a police body cam

In any sound and reasonable society the Nevada State Police, would compensate fully for their mistake without even the courts interference.

It is personal information and should never be live streamed in the first place.

We agree

They literally live streamed private data. How can an appeal not be possible? Better Call Saul.

Ridiculous. But carrying your seed phrase, on paper, in your wallet is pretty ridiculous too.

Yeah itโ€™s like walking around with a $1 million in your pocket

Oof.

Ouch ๐Ÿค• thats a tough one

Long passphrase would have prevented this

yep. passphrases are underrated

Timelocks are even more underrated. I wish more wallets made it more easy to do timelocks.

There's no way that a government run "seed phrase recognition" program could be added to cameras to send anything looking like a seed phrase to a bot that would immediately run the seed on multiple platforms to breach the wallet. Nope. That technology doesn't exist.

Word to the wise: keep your seed phrase on you at all times. A FAKE seed phrase, dumbass. :)

It had flashed across my mind to store a copy of one wallet's seed phrase in this way .... but now it is obvious that this is a bad decision.
