Bring back just paying for stuff directly.

The “free” content model where you don’t have to pay for content upfront—but end up paying for it over time via surveillance and spam on every channel—has become a nightmare.

Just pay for stuff and get stuff.

While they're at it, they can bring back piecemeal (pay per item) as an alternative to subscriptions

Agree. The “everything as a subscription” model is also a stupid clusterfuck.

In somewhat related news, I’ve been telling employers that dollars-per-hour is a shit way to pay employees, because almost no employment is paying for time. They’re paying for stuff to be done. So why not pay per unit of stuff done?

Usually because stuff done is not easily quantifiable, or varies in value. Things like fruit picking it's far easier to quantify.

For sure. Totally correct.

Designing a new pay structure certainly wouldn’t be easy—and it might have to be done on a business-to-business basis—however, it would likely be a worthwhile effort.
