Hey nostr, time to call it a day. I've been looking at some chicken tunnels on yt, and i might experiment with something like that, mainly because it would give the chickens more room to roam and still be protected from predators. We'll see.

I'm so glad nostr exists, i feel like i belong here. Yall have a good evening nostr friends. #homesteading #grownostr

Chicken tunnels are great, but they do increase the attack surface for a clever predator to exploit, and as such, they need to be made much beefier than you might expect. (From what I've heard and also from a standard threat assessment model.)

Thanks for your input on them. I'm trying to decide if its worth the effort, or maybe not😊

because of the area we live in, we have a high population of mink. who kill entire flocks of chickens for being to close to their den, and can fit through 1 inch holes. my coop is encased in various forms of concrete πŸ˜‚

Oh my, one inch holes?! Sounds like a nightmare to defend against that.

it has been. weve lost 4 flocks. but the coop is a fortress now.

Is there anything that can be done to make the area less hospitable for the mink family so they want to move somewhere else? I have no experience with mink…

yes. they seem to not like birdshot from a shotgun.

Last summer my wife and I kind of got into weasels (weird). Watched a documentary and it was really interesting. Never knew the variety: least weasels, stats, ferrets, fishers, badgers, wolverines, otters. Very skilled and clever.

It's worth as much or as little effort you wish.

Build a Nerf Dome to protect your free-range chickens. An automated system of Nerf Gun batteries. Goodnight and pleasant dreams. πŸ˜ƒ

Gotta protect those egg layers.

Nowadays, eggs are a golden ticket.
