They weren’t really “politically unstable” though in the sense they were a French vassal state like many other African countries; internal conflict having largely been driven by Western interests meant the resources kept flowing regardless of which faction was in charge or what internal strife was conjured.
The difference now is African nations are telling the West to GFY and re-aligning towards the BRICS pole.
This is the essence of multipolarity. The days of everyone falling in behind the US and Europe to take some handouts from the IMF to enrich themselves short term whilst advancing Western interests are over. Things are gonna get bumpy
