Took me a bit but I got there. Still much to learn.

What advantages do you get from running proxmox vs just straight up Start9?
Curious since I'll be setting all this up soon.
Dimi will probably best answer I have a lot to learn. But for me itâs about being able to take a copy of your vm and loading onto another machine. I used to use umbrel and migration is a nightmare and comes with great risk from what I understand. Once I get this sorted my aim is to get a raid system setup so having a vm will make this easy. Iâm just taking it one step at a time.
Ya, your virtual machine is just a config file referencing other files, so it makes things pretty simple to manipulate.
Most plebeian builds wonât have raid, but disk failure tolerance is a huge requirement for reliable data storage over time. Massive benefit. But, backups work too, so it can be worked around.
For starters, control of what uses the commoditized resources - this lets you specify & tune cpu, memory, storage, & networking allocations to virtual machines and containers.
Like start9, youâd manage proxmox from the gui, but youâre going to then tell proxmox to allocate specific amounts of different resources to start9, which will then be created as a virtual computer within your proxmox server. Youâre then free to use the remaining resources on completely separate things. You can even run proxmox in proxmox if you wanted!
The hardware is still shared amongst the vm/ctâs, so there is a bit of overlap, but they mostly run in isolation from each other. This is extremely useful because for the most part, fucking with one thing generally wonât affect another, depending on what that is. Maybe youâll reboot your bitcoind container & have to understand why that might make your local mempool instance break for a few minutes, but itâs not like rebooting or destroying your mempool vm will accidentally delete files needed for bitcoind.
The biggest benefit is recoverability - if you plan well, their backup/snapshot features will save your ass time and time again.

One of these days Iâll get around to that đ
