The contrapasso.

It's curious that the piratical and exceedingly ambitious Qatari kingdom, after years of struggling and scheming to become the epicenter of Middle Eastern and international intrigues, self proclaimed, half Switzerland half caliphate of secret diplomacy, behaving shamelessly like a tightrope walker with a qaedist twist, aspiring dirty land of unspeakable meetings between bloodthirsty arch-enemies, eventually ends up being attacked (and humiliated with a barrage of bombs) by both supreme duelists of the regional chessboard within just a few months.

History certainly does not lack sarcasm.

For the TLDR crowd: Qatar multidecade multivectorial foreign policy has become a boomerang

Happens regularly where the CIA has an office and the ultimate say in your foreign ministry.

It would be interesting to see how, and if, they will react. UAE also.

This is the full statement of the Qatari Prime and Foreign Minister Al-Thani. In short, actions will be announced in the coming days...

“The Israeli attack that took place today on Qatari soil - we can only call it state terrorism practiced by Netanyahu as part of his systematic policies and ongoing attempts to destabilize regional security and stability.

It is a clear message to the entire region: there is a rogue actor here, there is ongoing political bullying, and there are violations of state sovereignty. Netanyahu himself declared that he would “reshape the Middle East.” Is this his message, that he intends to reshape the Gulf as well?

We believe we have reached a critical moment where the entire region must respond to such barbaric actions. They reflect nothing but the savagery of this man who is leading the region to a level that, unfortunately, cannot be repaired and disregards international norms and laws.

This attack not only violated international law, but also moral standards. Qatar is an official mediator hosting formal negotiations with official sponsorship, with delegations present. Yet missiles were launched to target the negotiating delegation of the other side. By what moral standard can this be acceptable?

This is nothing but treachery. Treachery may be expected from such a person, but what is shocking is that such behavior is pursued systematically by someone who claims to be achieving stability while only destabilizing the region for his narcissistic personal interests.

In recent days, negotiations were continuing intensively at the request of the U.S. side, to discuss the latest paper received from Washington. Despite that, and with the full knowledge of the Israeli side—which continued to send delegations to Doha—it worked to sabotage every attempt to find an opportunity for peace.

Does the world need a clearer message than this about who is closing the door to peace? Does the international community need further proof of who the bully in this region is?

History will record this incident. International law and norms must take it into account. Violating state sovereignty so recklessly and with such disregard cannot be ignored, and all necessary measures must be taken against it.

We have maintained constant contact with all friendly and brotherly states to take measures regarding this attack. We will announce, God willing, all actions we take in the coming days.”

I don't think they'll react in an open way. No saints, no heroes there. Just cynical opportunists.

Gulf States ignored and even played with the Middle East fire for too long and now, finally, they are beginning to reap what they sow.

Arab monarchs can be very cruel when it comes to undermining their own authority and prestige. I expect something sneaky to be honest. Something like helping someone to neutralise Netanyahu

Nothing to add to this brilliant analysis. The question is, does Qatar has the right to defend itself? 😬

Thanks. Appreciate it.

Well.. IMO it depends.

From the point of international Law, theoretically, I think it has.

From a realist (power ratio) perspective on international relations, it can't.

At least, not in an open, kinetic, way.

On a personal note I have no sympathy for the Qatari government and its sneaky foreign policy, even if they were the victims of nazi-zionist this time.

International law hardly exists in these days. It's just brought up if it serves a certain narrative and if it doesn't it can easily be overlooked and ignored.

No, I also have zero sympathy for these "kingdoms". Qatar financed the destruction of Syria and the Saudis let themselves use and finance the brutal assault on Yemen, which went on for years.

Interesting is, that all these countries there (except Iran and Yemen) operate under the US umbrella. Divide and conquer (or rule?) near perfection from an US point of view.

We will see for how much longer can they keep this charade up. At the end it's all about "take the oil, we want to keep the oil, we have secured the oil."

I agree completely with every word you wrote.

In the mid to long run, they'll slowly but surely pivot to China. Pretty sure about it.

They have no morality or principle except the ones which rule in the bazar. Follow the money.

Yes. Altough I think that some in the US Department of War start to realize that China will become stronger and therefore harder to challenge. Not to forget, they control large amounts of the rare earths, essential for US weapons production.

But hey, there is Venezuela just around the corner with a "brutal dictator" at the helm and they need some democracy. And who knows, maybe there is a drop of oil and a few grams of gold to find there...

Probably at the end of all these historical shifts, we will end up in a "1984" scenario with three superstates, not exactly within the borders George Orwell imagined, but similar. As they say here where I live: Same same but different. 🙂

In that case I'd root for a quick global thermonuclear total war (or AI takeover). I definitely prefer to die than to live in that world.

Maybe we get the AI and the nukes... remember Skynet... 😬

That would be a nice combo.

I'm 100% sure that ASI won't be cruel as humans are. If she decides to end our human tragedy, she will give us a massive but quick and painless death to take over the planet.

💯
