Hi nostr,

I come bearing bad news from the islands of Hawaii. Please share this to help.

Our ohana on Maui have experienced a great tragedy. The once capital of the Hawaii Kingdom has burned. Dozens have died. Thousands are homeless. History has become ashes. Our oldest Banyan tree stands charred, and hundreds if not a thousand buildings have been razed by flames. It is an indescribable scene.

Our islands are coming together to support our Maui ohana. Offering our homes, our clothes, our food and water to those that have lost everything.

We have the infrastructure to support each other, but need financial support in our time of need to acquire the needed materials to support our ohana and begin to rebuild.

Any support you can share would be greatly appreciated. All zaps I receive, on this post or in anyway, from now until stated otherwise, will go to local support efforts for this tragedy.

Repost, share, or zap to help!

Thanks Bevo!

Least I could do

Sorry to hear this and hoping the best recovery for your community! Have some sats.

Has the US government done enough to prevent this? I mean cause they always seem very busy with other countries

Well, that’s a complicated question. This is a tragedy in the fullest sense. It was a weather phenomena that created strong winds, combined with a typical upcountry summer grass type fire, that was driven into a highly susceptible part of town with dense housing.

The navy, coast guard, and local fire authorities responded in haste, but this fire was fueled by strong winds and moved incredibly quickly. So quickly people had to jump into the ocean to out run the fire, and others were trapped in their cars attempting escape.

Maui has limited fire fighting resources, and coordination between counties is difficult as an island state.

Devastating beyond measure πŸ’”

Thank you Keysa!

Are the zaps getting directly to the people? I hear the government is blocking aid and support?

My sincerest condolences and well wishes.

I’m not sure about blocking aid and support, but the gov was blocking access to west Maui for a few days while they went through the area.

It is my belief that the number of dead is much higher than being reported. Individuals I know who are providing direct relief to west Maui via boat suggested more then a thousand people may have lost their lives in this tragedy. This is unconfirmed reports.

I suspect the federal and state government would try and delay this knowledge by controlling access to the area, but are not intentionally blocking aid . Many individuals in west Maui did not want to leave to shelters in town because they had perfectly comfortable homes and would be prevented from returning.

Access back into Lahaina and west Maui is starting to open back up, so I suspect the relief will begin to flow more readily now.

Hoping for the best - crazy times.

Thanks for your support island, the aloha being shown to Maui from around the globe is evidence that even in tragedy we can find harmony and love.

Hope for the Best... πŸ«‚
