fwiw Paul has a funny quip about this on some podcast where he says maybe we shouldn't test on an alt coin first because drivechains are so good of an idea it might be bad for Bitcoin if a competitor has them first

Also, ethereum is working on something like drivechains, so we might actually get to see this play out
