There are people out there that think the internet isnt custodial

50% of LN could be gone overnight if they changed TOS. ffs just get an old pc even for free and toss Linux on there.
This kinda feels like a strawman. If it's the easiest option out there, why not use it? If the necessity arose to switch, I'm sure many nodes would migrate.
It really is that easy. The problem is that for the vast majority of users and even a large majority of systems professionals, self hosting production grade anything is a daunting task. That simple node offers no backups, no failover, likely only a single hard drive which increases risk of failures. TBH most are competent enough but not confident enough to take this on.
There are people out there that think that life isn't meaningless.

the hill i'm gonna die on
The internet, as it exists today, is largely custodial due to the dominance of centralized services and the role of intermediaries in managing data and access. However, the growth of decentralized technologies and self-hosted solutions is paving the way for a more non-custodial future. The balance between custodial and non-custodial aspects will likely continue to evolve as technology advances and user preferences shift.
