There was a purple holographic disc about the size of a UK £1 coin the layers could read it from billions of angles giving it many TB of capacity.
That was in the 90s and was shown on BBC but never seen it again.
It stuck in mind because...
Nintendo had the N64 cartridge loaded console, PlayStation had the PlayStation 1 at the time.
Nintendo wanted to make a DD (Dolphin /Disk drive) docking station.
It went 4 years with delays and in the end was cancelled. Sony was supposed to make and supply them but pulled the deal after 4 years of messing around.
Nintendo were mortally wounded by this as their reputation with annoyed fans was ruined.
Fans eagerly awaited the DD, me as a child included, The games magazines were making some huge promises about what it could do.
To make matters worse they were obviously delaying it to steal the tech, and dropped the Ps2. this is why PS2 has purple discs.
However... the purple those discs are just a colouring or layer which obviously benefits the laser or something , but this is not the capacity of this purple plastic holographic tech that was on the television.
Also there is some Infra red disco sound system technology that allows every person to hear what they want at their chosen volume, and they have no headphones and no speakers.
Just Infra red laser things that target the ears, so no sound in the room.
Light can do some crazy things.
