The way I'm reading it is you will still need a phone number to sign up. The username is only for sharing. That is bull shit if its the case.

I played around with the beta. You still need your phone number.

Sounds like it, and if someone is using the old version of the app they'll still be able to find you so backend hasn't changed at all.
