Can you form a self-concept, an identity, that is totally free from circumstance? An identity that could withstand being picked up and dropped into a completely different life?

An identity that would survive being a different sex, a different nationality, a different marital status, a different career, different physical capabilities, a different time in history?

If you can pull that off, that is one @#$#$%#$ solid self-concept!!!

Ha, from what I've gathered you are not really fond of religion, but what you are talking about quickly turns into a religious question. You can go further with your questioning and ask what is the Entity that survives the death of identity and how it would manifest in a human form. Not suggesting anything (ekhm, Christ).

I'm not fond of shame and punishment based religion. Those I have a problem with.

But no I don't think this is a religious question, it's a philosophical one. Are you your circumstances?

Well, my current identity is most certainly my circumstances to some degree, but I believe in a shared Identity that's eternal. Not a fan of the current form of Christianity either, especially the various Protestant kinds.
