I grew up that way but my wife, being from Japan, has since enlightened me.

I understand that, I also grew up with this policy and take my shoes off almost immediately. It feels right 😅
Inside stays nicer for everyone.
I think the big reasons much of Americans in the countryside still wear their outdoor shoes inside is (A) dog culture, (B) hard to convince your elders of previous generations, and (C) haven't really considered any other reality.
