Does anybody else have an extreme fear of flying, but love to travel and visit new places?

In the days leading up to the flight, I get anxiety, severe.

On the day of, it’s awful.

Once on a trip to Maine with my wife, I almost didn’t board the plane out of fear.

From take off to landing I cannot get the anxiety under control.

Any advice?

I have tried Xanax and Whiskey, but neither of these really help.

I read a lot about the physics of flying and it does t help.

I watch a YouTube channel called “Pilot Debrief.” This made things worse.

Seriously, any help?

Have you read the book No More Fear Of Flying by Allen Carr?

I completely understand how you feel and I was like that for many years.

I’ve managed to overcome it now and it’s been a great sense of freedom and I actually look forward to flying.

Thank you Marie. I will read the book.

Plus I did a lot of therapy as well, for me it was linked to not being in control.

Once I was able to let go of things I could not control and address the ‘what if’s’ I was able to understand and relax.

Haha I eat like 1,000mg before a long haul to Europe, I don’t freak out ever, I think I have the disease from office space after he was hypnotized 😂

the last time I did this I was riding the BART train to the airport and I thought I was taking off already between stations.

Try to skydive or fly in a helicopter during the wind then you will not gonna feel any turbulence and fear in the future 😅

Some Gabapentin (will target your nerves directly) or Valium/Diazepam (sedative and slight muscle relaxer) should get you right as rain.

Have you tried meditation? It’s not a quick fix, but it helps you deal with a noisy mind. You can’t control having feelings or where they come from, but you can control how you respond to them. My favorite lesson from Marcus Aurelius; focus on what you can control

I think about how if the plane crashes at least I will get to experience something very few people ever will.

I have something similar where I am panicked the day before and at night I dream of trying to pack my bag but never seem to pack everything or be wearing the right clothes to leave my house. I end up just throwing some clothes into a backpack and hour before leaving. I frequently cancel trips the day of. this isn't due to a fear of flying but it also doesn't happen when leaving for a road trip.
