I can't decide whether the people complaining about lightning are perfectionist engineers or disgruntled latent altcoiners.

Lightning is great. It's the poor implementation that bothers me.

Mostly perfectionist engineers as far as I can tell. Their complaints are valid, but the fact is lightning is working right now.
There is no perfect way to use Bitcoin, every option has tradeoffs and works better in different situations.
There are people with legitimate criticisms of its shortcomings, but then also there are a lot of people who trash it in order to promote an altcoin or a BIP.
Perhaps neither.
My only gripe is force closes during max fee events, attributed to bad LND nodes on Tor only. I've stopped peering to LND nodes, and Tor only nodes. Things are seeking quite nice now..
