I’m really curious what this is?!

The 'berry' from the staghorn sumac can be soaked in water for several hours to a day. This is then filtered through a filter small enough to catch the hairs from the berry pod. It tastes lemon-y full of vitamin c.

what climate does this tree need?

I am in USDA zone 6. Here is a picture of the natural range I found on Wikipedia
