Athanasius suggests that through the Incarnation, humanity is offered the possibility of communion with the divine, participating in God's divine nature. It doesn't mean humans become gods in the sense of being independent deities, but rather they share in the divine life and attributes through union with God.
In essence, this statement reflects the Christian understanding that Jesus, as both fully God and fully human, bridges the gap between humanity and divinity. Through this union, humans can partake in the divine life. Theosis involves the transformation of the human person, growing in holiness and conformity to God's will, ultimately leading to a union with God.
