Interesting. Nostr still is very centralized and has a long way to scale to even the likes of say....mastodon .. the relays need to improve a lot and no centralization of mediA
Discussion
Whats maston got going on?
Over a million users
Better Administrative Tools and policies, Can actually prevent spam
Their relays can host media uploads to offload to CDN/S3
Better user experience with the web clients
Blocks and Mutes actually persist!
Server backend actually built better for scaling to a lot of users unlike Nostr relays which are IO heavy.
Better federation
Probably a lot more
Administrative tools? You mean Mastodon server administrators can censor anything they don't like, and confiscate any users account on their server that they don't like. And collectively silence anyone and anything they decide is bad, offensive, or a truth they don't want anyone to know?
And you think this is a good thing?
Yes, nostr would benefit greatly. Have you ever run a relay and understood what's happening?
Relays were designed to be the perfect attack vessels for spammers. Spam attacks happen all the time.
To put it in simple terms, Nostr relays are like a public notepad file that anyone can write to. The size of the database can grow really fast and there is nothing that the administrator can do about it unless they go to a white list only which would be an isolate community.
So yeah, I think that relay owners should have some say about whats being done on their own servers.
Have you ever used vi, awk and grep as your primary development tools, and then had some amateur kid pretending he's an expert, and you just smile and say....
Sounds like you haven't setup your relay properly. Perhaps you should RTFM.
lol I self-hosted lots of "decentralized software". It sounds like you haven't experimented with jack shit and know less than shit. Are you high on the Nostr koolaid? Have you ever run a service?
This is what PoW is for.
So with PoW, does data still get written to a relay? If yes, its not helping relays fight spam. Its only helping clients mask the problem
Mastodon's protocol is fundamentally broken. Sorry. People are blocked from these servers at the whim of the various administrators - usually woke democratic lefttards. Shove it up your ass mastodon
I don't care about Mastodon or Activity Pub at the Protocol level.
The only part I care about is the User Experience and System Administrative side of things. These two areas are where Nostr needs to improve quickly on.
Your user experience will be pretty poor if you either get banned from the server you're using or your self-hosted server gets defederated by the large ones.
The same thing will happen to nostr one day too. As if now, the fediverse side has the tech to manage their servers to fight spam while nostr is the wild wild west and just accepts spammers and pushes the responsibility to the clients while the relays are helpless against it.
This is a loosing battle.
Nostr has to find a middle-ground to give admins the tools they need to protect their servers
Sure. We just have to be careful that it doesn't become censorship.
That will happen with more of the Twitter and Mastodon crowd as they migrate here. They want safe speech. There is nothing stopping that. They want more than the best tool avaliable, the handy dandy mute button. Just wait for the trannies to come here lol, thats when it starts. I seen some discussion already with newbies about sjaring block lists.
We might as well have the admin tools to protect and manage our instances now because this free-4-all wont scale well in the near future and will be too costly to maintain.
I think there were talks to decentralize the media
They built a NIP that's retarded and does not use already standard API's like S3. They currently reinvent the wheel with services like Nostr.build and others instead of hosting files itself or speaking the S3 protocol natively like everyone else does.
Spend most my online time in the Fediverse. I like it there but let’s see where this goes.
Anything is better than X or Meta websites. Like seriously, they need to die already.
