The quality of box fans (and most other things) is in constant decline. A 1960's Westinghouse box fan probably still works today, is more powerful, quieter and even had reverse direction capability. Today, they make lots of noise, made of plastic, and barely make a breeze. Things should be better today, not worse.

I work in manufacturing industry and one of the issues is that consumers don't want to pay for the higher quality items. Your box fan is a prime example, you can purchase industrial grade box fans but they start at around $150.00. Most people don't want to pay that so you won't find them on Amazon or Home Depot.

You can get the industrial stuff over here (Aus) but they tend to be the lower end & they aren't what I'd call quiet.
