It's wild to me that more people don't remember this. Everyone's favorite liberal personalities were actively sabotaging a genuine left-wing movement but they used laugh tracks so it was okay.

Same rule as always: attack threats, coddle the futile movements. Gotta have some place for the malcontents to play as revolutionaries, and on the front doorstep of the big donors is not the place for a LARP sandbox.
OWS was the last dying gasp of a leftist-populist political movement stricken by cancer. So paralyzed by proto-wokeness, they couldn't even manage basic stuff like kicking out rapists or preventing homeless from stealing all of the food supplies. Afterall, "leaderless" movements were all the rage! Operation Chanology! The Arab Spring! Meanwhile, all of their supposed "allies" left them out to dry. It's quite tragic, really.
