We gave Bitchat a try with the plebs during our Bitcoin walk.

One missing feature is the ability to save a contact under a custom name. At this point, you can only change your own name—not the display names of your contacts.

Also, the main page felt too crowded, constantly filled with updates about who’s going online or offline, making it easy to lose track of messages.

That said, I appreciate that the app is still in its infancy, and hopefully, more improvements will come with future releases.

Saving a name will require a server and that defeats the whole purpose

I do not suppose so and at least it was not my experience today. We can even favorite some nicknames for later contact. If it was the case that it forgot the username with each login, having this feature would have been meaningless.
