Phoenix has that fee issue. I’ve seen it a lot. But comparing to running my own node or VPS, it’s gonna end up costing less. That said, it doesn’t make sense for small lightning payments to be more costly than on-chain transactions, even if you’re not the node-runner.
I haven’t had the issues you mentioned with LOL though. Maybe because I haven’t used it enough. :)))))
There’s one thing this little guy is not afraid of and that’s the one thing all dogs are afraid of.
Happy New Year! 🎊

I’ve humored nostr:npub1qqvt0m3nlvjnssmrn33w9yh7cuq2dx5nkz8wxax9hk5hrjdnj4jqz8cn3w ‘s uncommon views by engaging in his content. It’s been interesting and even sometimes entertaining. I challenge Ben to watch this 14 minute flat earth video: https://youtu.be/hnDzWQDt8e0
There are people who challenge the mainstream because they question everything and arrive at opposing conclusions.
There are also contrarians who sense that something is wrong with the mainstream and then proceed to believe the opposite of whatever it says.
The latter don’t arrive at their views through critical thinking, but by reflexively rejecting anything once it has mainstream endorsement.
For me, belief in the flat-earth absurdity is a useful litmus test to distinguish between the two.

Fun to see you have Elf on your list. Watched it some days ago, just before Christmas. Here's what I wrote about it:
My BitAxe came back under warranty! ⛏️
My original BitAxe broke down and despite all the efforts on nostr:nprofile1qqsrc2zasv9lgvcnttnpcusmw5xwzxh9ktscwufd0gt347numfjfu5qpz3mhxue69uhhyetvv9ujuerpd46hxtnfduqs6amnwvaz7tmwdaejumr0ds932788's
part and his ongoing communication with the manufacturer, the issue could not be resolved. (I felt bad that I had made my problem Jester’s problem.)
Fortunately, in the end, they agreed to take the device back and sent me a new one.
The picture you see shows the first hash rates my miner is producing.
Now I feel cool again! 😎

I need to add, for the use-case that you have in mind (I have similar goals too), a NAS is highly recommended.
What I use is openmediavault, which is a Debian-based Linux just like Ubuntu and Linux Mint. What you run there are some services, including containers, and that is where you can run services that simulate centralized corps, such as Apple and Google. Here's a list:
- NextCloud: Google Drive
- OnlyOffice: A companion for NextCloud to view and edit your Word documents and spreadsheets
- PhotoPrism: iPhotos
- Audiobookshelf for Audible, Amazon Books, and even podcasts
- Jellyfin: Netflix, Apple Music/Spotify (my top favorite, which was the very first thing I installed!)
I'm still in the midst of my learning experience, but in the far future, when I feel very comfortable with them, I'ma make videos about them.
Though a NAS has a learning curve, the great news is that if you have had a Bitcoin node like Umbrel or StartOS, you are already way more prepared and have a good grasp of the concepts required for running a NAS.
I greatly support the idea. If you have any other machine that you can use for everyday use, you can turn this one into a Linux-only machine. Instead of Ubuntu, I’d recommend Linux Mint which is very similar in user-friendliness, but also closer to us in philosophy.
Or, as some other people here recommended, you can install Linux on a VM on the same machine. But if you have a newer machine for everyday use, I’d recommend running Linux Mint only on this one.
Learning how to code builds character and brings joy.
I don't care if vibe-coding becomes so efficient and accurate that we don't have to code ourselves.

USD cannot be used as a means of exchange. But there is not much hurdle in your way if you wanna store your surplus in USD. It would help and a minority do that.
We are trying to educate people on self-custody and using the lightning network. Government would like to crack down on it, but they haven’t been that successful. Despite all that, the rate at which people should be turning to Bitcoin is way lower than it should be. Those who have grasped it have a less difficult time - financially.

Yes, indeed. And I am saying that as an Iranian.
When I exited the country, 8 years ago, every dollar was 4K tomans. Now it’s 150K!

Not sure why I’d been putting off watching 12 Angry Men (1957) for so long.
I watched it for the first time tonight and it’s a film worth revisiting at least once a year.
Sidney Lumet is a true master of cinema!

- Go with the flow.
- No, I gotta get out of the flow. I’m in the flow. That’s what got me here.
It was a very grown-up exchange from a movie made mainly for children. Didn't want to let it go unquoted.

GM! TIL, positioning of antennae on your wifi router matters. All vertical is not good.
Having antennas at different angles:
* Improves reliability
* Reduces dead spots
* Helps devices regardless of how their antennas are oriented
I'm going to test with: | | \ -
On the pic: GL.iNET Flint 2 (GL-MT6000)
Vendor firmware is openly OpenWrt with vendor GUI added, but not replacing OpenWrt.
Of course I flashed new OpenWrt, with a custom build from pesa1234.
Repo: https://github.com/pesa1234/MT6000_cust_build
Forum: https://forum.openwrt.org/t/mt6000-custom-build-with-luci-and-some-optimization-kernel-6-12-x/185241
Why I use this combo?
Well, a person I admired very much recommended this setup to me
when I asked for a modern anti bufferbloat setup on Twitter. His name was Dave Taht. I followed his work in combatting #bufferbloat for years. His dedication resulted in the whole planet slowly making more and more use of technologies and setups which improve network latency. He passed earlier this year and I'm not likely to change this soon.

I’m using a GL router. Are they by the same manufacturer? I connect it to my router and my NAS is connected to it. It helps me bypass ISP’s restrictions on router configurability.
The fact about the antenna was interesting. I’ma tweak the antenna now to see how it affects the coverage.

What is this elf on the shelf trend about?
The left criticizes bearing guns all day long, but it is them who exploit guns to oppress their opponents.
I’m really interested in experimenting with this technology, but the cost is a hurdle.
It requires a minimum of three signer devices, each costing 150K sats.
This interview with Odell features Frostsnap co-founders Lloyd and Nick, the same people who demonstrated the DarkSkippy exploit.

It's really good!
I have tried protein powders in the past. I didn't notice any improvement even after continuous use, say over a month.
Though my dient is only meat and I get lots of creatine from my food, the creatine supplementation made a noticibale difference when it comes to athletic performance. I'm quite satisfied with it. Hope you will be too.
I do value Monero, but I find lightning and coinjoin more convincing solutions for doing so.
If someone tells me there’s an alternative to Nostr, I’m open to hearing it. Nostr is still in its infancy.
My first question, though, would be: “Can you zap people on your protocol?” ⚡️
