There are people who challenge the mainstream because they question everything and arrive at opposing conclusions.

There are also contrarians who sense that something is wrong with the mainstream and then proceed to believe the opposite of whatever it says.

The latter don’t arrive at their views through critical thinking, but by reflexively rejecting anything once it has mainstream endorsement.

For me, belief in the flat-earth absurdity is a useful litmus test to distinguish between the two.
