If you have an Android TV and you are not using the following Apps, what's wrong with you?

1. Tivimate

2. Stremio

3. SmartTube

I've got 1 TV in the house, a 10 year old Samsung & still going strong (after repairing at the 3rd year).

The smart TV bit is a bit old now.

What's the best way to bring smarts back into the TV?

Believe it or not, the Onn brand Google TV box is getting good reviews, but a Nvidia Shield is still pretty loved.

Nvidia shield is an investment and honestly makes more sense for newer TV's that support DV/HDR/HLG.. a cheapo firestick is the way for old TV's

Yeah, I’ve heard people have had decent luck rooting those.

Just go to dev settings and allow unknown app installs. Use downloader from the appstore to get whatever apk and done.

Root access is not necessary really.

Just stick on a firestick/Google Chromecast with Google tv. It brings Android + faster processing. Then stick in the good apps and you are golden.

If your panel is good, you'd be shocked as to how much value a good Android stick brings.

Yeah - I've been using a firestick & streaming from my next cloud server.

I just want sure if there was something else.

I'll add those apps & have a play.
