Getting your license is like taking a driver's education course. You have to learn the rules, and you also learn a ton about electronics, RF, basic physics and more. I understand not wanting to get a license but I think you'll be missing out on so much. If you're in the US, buy a copy of the lay flat spiral bound ARRL technician manual and you will learn a ton. Also, ham radio is basically a cult, so if you want to connect with local people (which I recognize you may not), there will be a line of excited to help people (known as Elmers) trying to get you across the licensing finish line.
