If you don't follow them to start with then you don't have to mute them. It's not like nostr if pushing content on you via an algorithm to decide what you do or do not want to see.
Furthermore, this is just noise. Nobody cares who you follow or don't follow. It's your nostr account to do with as you deem fit.

My point wasn’t about content being pushed on me or caring about who does or doesn’t follow who. It was about dealing with annoying people who constantly reply nonsense under my posts. So not following them doesn’t prevent me from seeing their engagements with my posts.
I agree though, the beauty of Nostr is simply that I’m the one that decides what gets in front of me. Thankfully I have a mute button to help with that. I intend to use it more often 😆
