This works flawlessly, but after the early years you need to teach them this skill and show them all the ways in the world in which we are tricked by this very thing so they are aware of it.
Use it when they are young, teach it when they are becoming aware of how the wider world works.
Govt: we're not going to ask you if we should listen to the will of the people. We're going to offer you two candidates we control and ask you to select which one most closely "represents" your values.
This doesn't work on my 6 year old. It aggravates the hell out of me. Someday it will aggravate society. =)
